DR. CARL B. GUSTAFSON, 89 Ocala - On September 9, 2011, the
world bade farewell to Dr. Carl B. Gustafson, a wonderful father, husband friend
and man of knowledge, peace and compassion. His life journey began on May 29,
1922 on a farm in Worthington, Minnesota. He earned his B.A. from Gustavus
Adolphus College in 1943. He earned his B.S. in 1954 and M.A. in 1956 from the
University of Minnesota. In 1975, he earned his Doctorate in Educational
Supervision from the University of Southern California. He was commissioned at
Yale University, McDill AFB and Barksdale AFB as a Flight Engineer in the United
States Army Air Corp and later in the United States Air Force. Employed by the
Department of Defense, he was the Superintendent of Schools in Europe, Asia,
Africa and the Mediterranean.
Upon retirement from Federal Service, Carl was
the Deputy Director for the Greater Boston Regional Education Center. He retired
again as Acting Superintendent of Education from Massachusetts. He enjoyed final
retirement in Ocala, Florida. He volunteered with the Marion County Correctional
Facility teaching inmates about the brain and the process of thought.
Very active within his church, The First
Congregational UCC, he designed and constructed a Labyrinth to be enjoyed by the
entire community.
Dr. Gustafson is preceded in death by his
parents, Robert and Alice and by his wife May, an equally loved and
compassionate person. Dr. Gustafson is survived by his companion, Pearl Mayer
and loving family: son Robert (Lisa), daughter Mary Campbell (John),
grandchildren, Audrey Campbell, Thomas Gustafson (Jennifer),
great-grandchildren, Aurora and Robert.
A memorial service will be held Thursday,
October 13, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at First Congregational UCC, 7171 SW State Road
200, Ocala FL 34476. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Carl's
name to First Congregational UCC.
