Eloise Arlene Longwell - Faculty

Retired School Teacher

Dec. 13, 1937 -- Oct. 14, 2001

MONTROSE -- Eloise Arlene Longwell, age 63, a retired school teacher and a resident of Montrose for most of her lifetime, died Sunday morning, Oct. 14, 2001, after a short battle with cancer.

Eloise Arlene Longwell, the daughter of James Oner Longwell and Lottie Ann (Smith) Longwell, was born on Dec. 13, 1937, in Montrose, Colo., where she spent her childhood years, graduated from Montrose County High School, and grew to adulthood. She continued to pursue her education at Western State College in Gunnison, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in teaching and counseling. She had Whittier College credentials to be a guidance counselor.

Eloise was employed as a school teacher from 1963 to 1964 at Dreux Air Force Base in France, taught from 1964 to 1965 in Japan at an Air Force Base to dependent children of military personnel and also taught at Torrance High School.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Montrose, past president of the Montrose Golf Club, belonged to Rainbow Girls, 4-H, was past president of South Bay Girls Athletic Assn., served on the California Interscholastic Assn., and many other physical education committees. Most recently she was a department chair for physical education at Torrance High School.

Eloise's special interests in life that brought her much happiness was coaching girls softball, basketball, golf, and tennis at Torrance High School. She especially loved golfing, fishing, and traveling abroad and domestically.

Surviving family members who had the privilege of sharing Eloise's life include one brother, Jim Longwell and wife Barbara; one sister, Joyce Raine; a longtime friend, Vivian See, all of Montrose, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Services in loving remembrance of Eloise's life will be officiated by Pastors Fred Thompson and Jeff Benson on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Montrose.

Interment will follow the service in the Valley Lawns Cemetery, south of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home, (970) 249-4400.
