Robert G. Hughes, age 89 of Carmi, died early Saturday morning May 18,
2013 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was born
November 22, 1923 in Crossville, the son of Fred and Bonnie (Brewer)
Hughes.
Robert had worked for the Department of Defense, International. He taught
in college universities and for the military. He was a veteran of the
Army/Air Force serving in WWII and Korea. He had been an aerial gunner on
a B-24 that crash landed in France. He was member of the American Legion
and had been Quartermaster at the VFW for 30 years. He volunteered at the
White County Senior Citizens Center in Carmi.
He is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends, Jack Lamont
and Vicki Harrelson. He was preceded by his parents, brothers, Bill,
Donald and Raymond.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Stende-back
Family Funeral Home in Carmi. A visitation will be held at Noon until the
time of service. Pastor Braden Willis will officiate.
Military burial rites will be provided by the American Legion and VFW
Posts of Carmi. Burial will take place in Stokes Chapel Cemetery. In lieu
of flowers, memorials may be made to the White County Senior Citizen's
Center.
