William Edward Elstran of Chapel
Hill died Feb. 4 after an extended illness. He was 65.
Born and raised in Chippewa Falls, Wis., he quarterbacked at Chippewa
High, where his team records from 1954-55 stand to this day. He was a
graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire and received a
master's degree from Stanford and a doctorate from the University of
Southern California. He spent 30 years with the Department of Defense
Dependents Schools in Europe. He retired to Chapel Hill in 1989, where he
wrote and worked in his woodshop. He served as local president and Region
III co-director of Torch International. In the summer of 2003 he was
recognized with a distinguished alumnus award from Chippewa High School.
There will be a memorial celebration at a later date.
Survivors include his wife, Sydney, of the home; daughter, Linden of
Brooklyn, N.Y.; a son, Clete, of Smyrna, Tenn.; and siblings, Jim, Joni,
Tom and Lee, all of California; and one granddaughter.
